Case Study: University of Illinois Wheelchair Basketball Series (2004)

I created Ottogarten Films llc to partner with the University of Illinois’ Department of Rehabilitation Education Services. Together we turned their world renown wheelchair basketball training curriculum into a 3-part video series, published on DVD, and included as a training supplement for student athletes and attendees of their storied training camps.

With a very narrow turnaround time of five months, I turned a wheelchair basketball curriculum into a shooting script; traveled to Champaign-Urbana, Illinois and worked with the coaches and student athletes to shoot the script; traveled home to Seattle where I edited, created on-screen graphics, soundtrack music, and rendered the final cuts for DVD masters. I also created the DVD menus and masters for publication and oversaw the production of 750 copies on-time and under budget.

The series was written by the celebrated coach Mike Frogley, winner of multiple Paralympic medals as head coach of the men’s Canadian Paralympic wheelchair basketball team. It is also produced and co-directed by U.S. Paralympic gold medal winner, Janna Mizens. The series includes narrations by Australian Paralympic gold medal winner, Grant Mizens, and U.S. Paralympic gold medal winner and current head coach of the United States women's national wheelchair basketball team, Christina Ripp-Schwab.

Since it’s publication, the curriculum has traveled the world assisting disabled sports programs and national wheelchair basketball teams alike. Within the first year of its release, the nation of Kenya was able to compete on the world stage for the first time and send their national wheelchair basketball team to the Gold (World) cup Qualifiers in Johannesburg, South Africa in 2004. And in 2007 competed in the 9th All African games in Algiers, Algeria placing fourth overall.
